Sawmill 25 strictly conforms to all requirements of the environmental legislation of Russian Federation. The mill is working towards the minimization of the adverse effects of production on the environment by way of constant improvement of technologies it utilizes. Purpose of the production modernization is not only obtaining economic benefits, but also decreasing energy consumption, minimization of harmful emissions, prevention and elimination of other ecological risks.
Modernization of log sorting and feeding equipment
The Maimaksa production unit of Sawmill 25 is located along the Maimaksa River, within its water protection zone. Till 2004, two sorting basins were used for log sorting. Total water consumption made up 90,000 cubic meters per year. Untreated waste water was disposed into the river, thus the basins were the main reason of contamination.
In winter it was necessary to keep the water in the basins above 0°С, so that they would not freeze – for this purpose hot water was permanently supplied into them.
Introduction of the dry log sorting line and elimination of the basins allowed to reduce dumpings of oil products, suspended particles, dry left-overs, tannins, phenols and other harmful substances into the Maimaksa river. Beside that, with introduction of the dry log sorting line there is no more need in disposal of silt that accumulated when the basins were used.
The new log sorting line allowed to reduce electric and heat energy consumption. The new technology allows to get wood wastes of natural moisture content, so they can be used as main fuel without additional treatment. Due to this the consumption of mazut has greatly decreased.
Construction of the water-heating boiler-house at the Tsiglomen production unit.
The boiler-house works mostly on wood wastes (bark). The new on-site boiler-house generating heat energy allowed to reduce heat production at the municipal mazut boiler unit, thus curtailing general consumption of mazut and lessening emissions of mazut combustion substances into the air.
Mounting of a unit of high-production kilns.
Kilning is the most power-consuming process as compared to other operations of the mill. The project implies mounting of a new kilning unit supplied by the Finnish company WSAB. This equipment consumes less energy while kilning. Such modernization will allow to optimize heat consumption in kilning and reduce unpractical loss of energy in the heating system.
Construction of a cogeneration plant at the Maimaksansky production site.
The new cogeneration station use wood wastes of natural moisture content as fuel. CHP produces heat and electric power for the company’s needs which allows to:
- reduce consumption of electric energy from the municipal power supply system, i.e. reduce consumption of electricity generated by burning of mazut
- reduce mazut consumption at the existing boiler-house
- quit using a coal boiler-room at the motor transport shop
- rationally utilize wood wastes instead of dumping them
